Gambling in North Macedonia, officially the Republic of North Macedonia, is legal in both land-based and online casinos. Gambling legislation authorizes casinos, slot halls, and bookmaking offices. Gambling websites are not regulated yet, though the authorities are working on it.
Laws and Regulators
Gambling in North Macedonia is regulated by the amended Law on Games of Chance and Entertainment Games 2011 as well as a set of gambling regulations (https://www.finance.gov.mk/mk/node/189). The Ministry of Finance of North Macedonia supervises gambling and issues gambling licenses.
Land Based Casinos
Under the existing gaming regulation, the total number of casino licenses that can be granted by the Ministry of Finance is five. The casinos that operate in North Macedonia are usually organized in five- or four-star hotels with first category restaurants and other catering objects for serving food and drink. They are mostly aimed at tourists. Such casinos are designed both for short visits and staying for several days, as hotel-casino complexes offer accommodation, food, and other entertainment.
Casinos offer a wide range of games of chance which are organized on gaming tables and on slot machines. Casinos are obliged to provide at least ten tables for different casino games and 20 slot machines. In accordance with the existing legislation, a casino may operate 24/7. All casinos keep a record of their visitors containing the basic data for personal identification.
Online Gambling
The Law on Games provides a legal framework for online gambling industry. The online market in North Macedonia has been monopolized by the joint venture between Lotarija na Makedonija (owns 51% of the entity) and Casinos Austria since 2014. 2Win (https://2win.mk/casino) is the only authorized online casino in North Macedonia.
